Bay Area charter schools, many backed by Silicon Valley investors, applied for and received paycheck protection loans for small businesses, a practice which some concede is an “optics issue” while others state is proper and in the spirit of the program. Traditional local public schools were not eligible to receive funds.

In San Francisco, two charter schools received funds from the program: San Francisco Creative Arts Charter School got nearly $600,000 and Envision Education’s City Arts and Tech High School received a loan for its consulting business.
