Murder by Numbers

A sobering study by the Bay Area News Group shows a disturbing pattern of police violence with little accountability, showing ‘how the combination of race, mental illness and aggressive policing often fuel a toxic mix of misunderstandings with lethal consequences.’

Black bay area residents made up 27% of those killed by police in the region since 2015, while making up only 7% of the population. Twenty percent of those killed by police were unarmed, a majority were experiencing a mental health crisis, and only 45% were committing a violent crime when killed by police.

Of the 110 incidents studied, not one officer who killed someone in the past 5 1/2 years has been prosecuted and only one was fired.
