The new BART Ambassadors are rolling out this week. Unarmed, they are supposed to act more as community liaisons and to give a presence of security. The ambassadors do not have the power to arrest people, but are meant to de-escalate situations and handle passenger complaints. The program has sparked controversy, particularly on Twitter, that the City spent “money on security officers, rather than hiring mental health workers,” but BART Board President Lateefah Simons maintains that they can be both.
