The New School in Potrero Hill has been criticized as disproportionately serving affluent, white children, while “leaving students of color behind.” Although the SF Board of Education recently rejected the school’s application to expand to K-8, the state board approved the charter’s application. The Board criticized New School and other charter schools “for competing with traditional public schools for much-needed space.” However, the expansion comes with a mandate, every student admit within the expansion must be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Officials hope this will diversify the student body and lead to better service for students in need.
