As Lunar New Year approaches, Mayor London Breed and SFPD Chief William Scott are warning members of the Chinese community to be on the lookout for blessing scams.

Blessing Scams involve a con artist convincing someone, usually a non-English speaking elderly woman of Chinese descent, a loved one, often a son, is in trouble. The con artist performs a blessing ceremony and the victim is then robbed of money and valuables.

Both Breed and Scott encouraged people to report possible con artists to the police, stating if a potential victim had trouble speaking English, police officers have a translation app they can use to communicate.
