San Francisco Mayor London Breed upended the already contentious race for San Francisco District Attorney by appointing Suzy Loftus, her endorsed candidate, to replace outgoing District Attorney George Gascon, following his resignation.

The reactions were varied and intense, including former State Senator Mark Leno coming out of political retirement to condemn the move as unfairly tipping the electoral scales for Loftus, protesters aligned with her electoral opponents showing up to the press conference, and the San Francisco Police Officers Association praising the appointment in a very unusual press release.
