Furor Over City’s Handling of Mentally Ill Homeless Reaching Tipping Point

Supes Ronen and Haney are demanding an immediate hearing into who is responsible for allowing 40 long term treatment beds to sit empty at SF General that led to a plan to remove and relocate beds to a nearby Navigation Center. Sup. Mandelman said hospital staffing issues could be part of the problem, but wants all 55 beds “online” by 2021.

The Public Defenders Office has served DPH with subpoenas regarding mentally ill inmates who are languishing in jail, rather than into mental health treatment facilities they’ve been ordered to relocate.

Also, the woman attacked in front of her condo sent a series of tweets pointing the finger at Mayor London Breed for not preventing her and others’ attacks as Mayor Breed rolled out a large scale pilot program to streamline access to services and housing for the mentally ill homeless who need it most.
