Santa Clara County Counsel James R. Williams and San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump Administration in U.S. District court Tuesday, asking the court to block a new rule that will give the federal government authority to deny entry or green cards to legal immigrants who use — or are likely to use — public assistance programs. The lawsuit argues that the administration’s new rule contradicts the “longstanding, existing definition of public charge” by redefining it to consider even minimal use of public assistance, and expanding it to include things like family size, credit score, and merely applying for benefits.
