A New Chapter in San Francisco’s Great Mural Wars

Following a debate that involved Fox News, international press, and even Danny Glover—the San Francisco School Board backed off on its decision to paint over a now infamous mural at George Washington High School. While the original decision to destroy the mural, which depicted George Washington’s life and was seen by some as a criticism of racism and others as a reinforcement of it, was unanimous, the board’s vote to instead conceal the mural was 4-3. Most baffling to this local man is the fact that covering the panel is somehow even more expensive than painting it over, costing $875,000 versus $600,000. (Happy to do the whole thing myself in an evening for less than half the price, SFUSD---call me.)
