AB 5, a bill aimed at strengthening protections for gig workers in California, passed a Senate committee this week with a few modifications. The bill, by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), would essentially codify a litmus test to define the parameters of what an “independent contractor” is, by assessing if they are free from control of the hiring company. AB 5 will face a floor vote after being assessed by the Senate Appropriations committee.
