Assemblymember David Chiu’s bill targeting oversized hospital bills has been shelved until next session after an intense lobbying storm by hospital CEOs against it. Though his bill, which would have banned “balance billing” and attempted to set standard rates for medical costs, made it to the Senate’s health committee its passage was to be pock-marked with amendments that would have made it useless. So, it will have to wait until next January for consideration. “It ain’t over yet,” Chiu said.
