Pocket Protection

The regular, major delays in MUNI service could be minimized with the addition of pocket tracks throughout the system, according to Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum. These pocket tracks- short sections of track between two main lines where malfunctioning trains can be taken off the main line- are staples in other major transit systems. They were not included in MUNI’s design in the 70’s as a lack of funding impacted planning as the downtown tunnel was being bored. Adding pocket tracks to several points in the system now is three to seven years away, at best.
