Formula Retail Bans Blamed for Vacant Storefronts

Critics of formula retail bans, popular initiatives which prohibit chain stores from opening locations in certain San Francisco neighborhoods, are blaming the practice for empty storefronts in new construction CItywide.

The bans, intended to keep rents down and allow neighborhood businesses to compete, prohibit larger organizations who are likely better financially able to withstand the financial hit opening a new business in certain storefronts.
