Supervisor Aaron Peskin’s ban on facial recognition surveillance technology passed its first board vote 8-1, with Supervisor Catherine Stefani in dissent and Supes Ronen and Walton were absent, it will need to pass one more vote before going to Mayor London Breed for signature.

The vote makes San Francisco the first city in the country to ban use of this technology. While privacy advocates are lauding the ban, others raised concerns about an outright ban when further refined technology could be utilized in solving crimes.
