The Board of Supervisors Rules Committee postponed a vote Monday on whether to make use of the law SB1045, a state law that would allow the city to force extremely mentally ill people into treatment after a hearing brought into question whether San Francisco’s behavioral health system had the capacity to do so.

Before involuntarily holding people, Supervisor Hillary Ronen called for a complete overhaul of the city’s behavioral health system. Mayor London Breed’s office announced it would include 30 new residential treatment beds for those who are suffering from both mental illness and substance abuse in its upcoming budget proposal.
