Changes May Be Coming to BART Police

BART leadership is dedicated to reducing crime at stations and onboard trains, but are in disagreement about how to do it. Some BART directors are pushing for new unarmed ambassadors trained in de-escalation tactics to defuse tough situations. However, the BART General Manager did not include the program in a staff budget, and instead proposed spending $2 million more annually to hire additional police officers, and $500,000 more annually to hire more fare inspectors.
