The number of official contacts between SFO personnel and unsheltered people have tripled since March 2017, and the airport is asking BART to step in. Officials believe that most homeless individuals staying at the terminal overnight arrive on the last BART train each night, when there is no return to San Francisco until morning trains resume. BART officials disagree that the train is responsible, and point to statistics showing that the SFO terminal sees the same number of homeless riders as other end-of-line stations, but is working with SFO to examine the issue and come up with mitigating solutions, including homeless outreach.
