Public Defender Manohar Raju has taken up the torch of former Defender Adachi, pushing state lawmakers to support a bill aiming to reduce criminal overcharging. AB 1636 (Bonta, D-Oakland) would allow judges to dismiss felony charges the first time a defendant appears in court, if probable cause is not provable. Raju called overcharging “morally wrong,” and a “perversion” of the justice system.
