Governor Newsom has issued an executive order suspending the death penalty in California, will be shutting down the death chamber at San Quentin, and also withdrawing the recently revised lethal injection procedures, thereby giving the 737 inmates on death row a temporary reprieve.

However, only voters can repeal the death penalty, which was enacted by voters in 1978, and statewide ballot measures to repeal were rejected in 2006 and 2016.  Newsom has not said if he plans to back another repeal measure in 2020.
