This year, one of the five honorary St. Patrick’s Day Parade grand marshals honored by Mayor London Breed was Martin McGuinness, a former leader of the Irish Republican Army who went on to become a prominent Sinn Fein politician and deputy first minister of Northern Ireland.

This issue some Irish are expressing is specifically in the wording which refers to McGuinness’ “courageous service in the military.” While some would say he brought peace to the divided country, many view McGuiness as a terrorist. Mayor Breed has apologized for the language on the certificate.
