A deal that boosts both teacher salaries and spending for the homeless has been reached by the Board’s Budget and Finance Committee, which was called “fair” and “balanced” by Board President Norman Yee. It will be voted on by the committee next week to send it to the full Board for approval.

This new and finalized deal came after nearly four hours of public testimony on the item. $52 million has been added to the windfall, from funds that would normally go to the city’s rainy-day fund. This money would go to teacher pay raises in FY 20-21. It also includes $40 million to buy small apartment buildings to prevent displacement, and another $46 million for homeless and behavioral health services.
