Joe Garofoli of the Chronicle examines the many challenges that could face Governor-elect Newsom in his first term. Despite a $4 billion budget surplus and a Democratic supermajority, 1 in 5 Californians live in poverty, 3 million don’t have health insurance, the homeownership crisis is spreading from big cities to small towns, and the public school system remains one of the most poorly funded in the county. And there are the wildfires. Experts suggest that Newsom will need to carefully focus and allocate his ambition and energy to balance these many issues
