A new report released Wednesday by the city’s budget and legislative analyst indicates that Muni’s bus and rail operator shortage is twice as bad as the agency had previously said.

Currently, the SFMTA has 1,894 full-time drivers working a day which is 411 fewer than the 2,305 drivers it needs for optimal service. Low pay and moderate risk associated with the job scares away new recruits - which contributed to this past summer’s “meltdown” of service.
