At the first school board meeting presided over by the new President of the SF Board of Education Stevon Cook, he decided to skip the Pledge of Allegiance - a move not seen in recent memory -  but one that does not violate the code requiring schools recite the pledge daily because that code does not extend to public meetings.

In lieu of the pledge, he recited the quote from Maya Angelou, “When you learn, teach.  When you give, get.” No one in attendance seemed to mind….except the San Francisco Chronicle.
