Shanell Williams, a City College Trustee and San Francisco native who grew up in the Western Addition, has thrown her hat into the ring for the November 2019 District 5 Supervisor race, which represents the Western Addition, Haight, and Cole Valley neighborhoods, among others.

Joe Fitz writes that Williams comes from a a family who "struggled with poverty, death and addiction, heroically rose from that hardship to leadership in a historically black community and now is running for San Francisco political office."

Williams' entry into the race puts Mayor Breed in a difficult position to endorse or not to endorse a Black woman candidate who grew up one block away from the Mayor, over Breed's appointee and successor Supervisor Vallie Brown who is running to keep her seat.
