Wednesday evening, the San Francisco Board of Appeals voted to allow the removal of “Early Days,” the large statue in Civic Center depicting Spanish figures standing dominant over a prone Native American man.

Supervisor Vallie Brown, who is part Native American, advocated strongly for its removal during public comment, reminding board members of a five-year effort in the 1990s to have it removed.

The agency called the statute “racist and disrespectful” - it will ultimately be placed in storage, not destroyed.
