SF to Remove Controversial Colonialist Civic Center Statuary

Mar 06, 2018
The Historic Preservation Commission has approved the removal of the "Early Days" statue that comprises part of the Pioneer Monument near Civic Center, which depicts a Spanish priest and a conquistador hovering over a kneeling, submissive Native American subject. The late Mayor Lee, Mayor Farrell, and Supervisor Jane Kim all supported the removal of the statue, which is widely viewed as racist in its depiction of the subjugation of native American peoples.
