Chinatown Grapples With Cannabis Debate

As San Francisco (and the rest of the state) prepares to embrace the legalization of recreational marijuana on January 1 of next year, much of the push back has come from Chinese leaders who for the most part oppose the further spread of cannabis in their neighborhoods.

Pius Lee, a Chinatown organizer, is one of the voices leading the charge against cannabis. He would like to see a ban on pot shops in Chinatown. On the other side of the spectrum is David Ho, an investor in Barbary Coast Collective, which is hoping to open in the Sunset.

These debates within the Chinese community may come to a head as early as Monday, when the Board of Supervisors are potentially slated to vote on limits within their respective districts.
