Massive fires raged overnight in five Bay Area Counties, forcing thousands to flee, closing two hospitals, and prompting calls to 911 from worried San Franciscans as southerly winds carried the smell of smoke across the City in the early morning.

Sonoma and Napa Counties are by far the hardest hit, but fires broke out in Mendocino, Marin and Alameda Counties overnight. 911 dispatchers are being inundated with calls by worried residents, and ask that calls only be placed regarding a smoke smell if the caller sees active, unattended flames.
