National Night Out
Yesterday (August 5th for those who haven’t had coffee yet) was National Night Out, neighborhood block party-style events promoted by local governments and the National Association of Neighborhood Watch to promote public safety. In San Francisco, an event held at a Visitacion Valley playground that was the site of a horrible shooting this summer was particularly relevant, and attended by folks like Police Chief Greg Suhr and Supervisor Malia Cohen. Some advocates took what they call a less “suspicion” and “surveillance” approach to the day, organizing the Second Annual Night Out for Safety and Democracy at the Lake Merritt amphitheater to focus on restorative justice issues.
